What is “Fast the First”?

Fast the First is an opportunity for us, both as individuals and as a church, to experience the amazing transformational power of the Holy Spirit. Fasting in scripture has always preceded the pouring out of God’s blessings of spiritual revival, unity and growth. As we continue to seek God’s face and his perfect will for our lives, we invite you to join with us on this journey.

Will you fast on the first day of each month with your Riverwood Family?

Scripture related to “corporate” (group) fasting…

Jonah 3:5-10

The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh:

“By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.”

When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.

Ezra 8: 21-23

There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions.  I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, “The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.”  So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.
