  • Reaching out to Muslims during Ramadan
We’re most of the way through Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. Ever since 9/11, Ramadan carries with it a certain amount of cultural tension here in the United States—tension that’s been ratcheted up by recent controversies over the Cordoba House debate and ill-advised publicity stunts by angry Christians. Yet in the midst of all the [...]
  • Today’s Devotional: How do we know that Jesus Loves Us?
If you’re anything like me, you find it hard to love someone if they don’t reciprocate your love. That’s not to say you don’t try, but it’s just hard to love someone who has given you no evidence that they’ll love you back. When it comes to loving Jesus though it’s important to know beyond a [...]
  • Miley Cyrus and the culture of judgmentalism
Do you judge celebrities and public personalities? What does it mean to you to “render judgment” on a pop star or role model gone astray? There’s an interesting article at Plugged In about teen pop star Miley Cyrus’ all-too-predictable transition from squeaky-clean Christian role model to hyper-sexualized music video vixen. But the article isn’t just lamenting [...]

Riverwood Small Groups provide a way for fellow believers to connect with each other, grow in their christian walk, and come alongside others within the church body.

All who call Riverwood home are heartily encouraged to hook up with a Small Group.  The ultimate outcome is that you are better off because of your Small Group, and as a result, bring greater glory to God!

Small Groups CONNECT  . . . with God and friends

After a few days, Jesus returned to Capernaum, and word got around that he was back home. A crowd gathered, jamming the entrance so no one could get in or out. He was teaching the Word. They brought a paraplegic to him, carried by four men. When they weren't able to get in because of the crowd, they removed part of the roof and lowered the paraplegic on his stretcher. Impressed by their bold belief, Jesus said to the paraplegic, "Son, I forgive your sins."  Mark 2:3-5

How blessed was the paraplegic to have friends such as these!  Small Groups can be a magnificent example of this parable being lived out in our church.

Small Groups GROW . . . in faith and knowledge of Christ

We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10 Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.  Col. 1:9-10

All Christians need habits that will help them grow closer to Christ.  Small Groups are a great habit!  Each of these habits – or spiritual disciplines such as prayer, bible study, fellowship, ministry, can be practiced and worked on within the confines of a Small Group.  It’s easier when you have to “do life together” vs. doing it alone.

Small Groups REACH . . . the hurting and lost

The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.  Galatians 5:6

Small Groups are a great vessel for expressing love for others.  Faith without actions isn’t worth more than the words on a page.  Reaching out, as a group and as individuals, demonstrates to the world around us that our faith in Christ is genuine.
